I want to be wrong about the okcupid dating apps experience compare to Hinge, so tell me if I am. What I care about with okcupid is the effort-to-result ratio more than anything else.

Most of my experience is with mainstream platforms, which may be why I am stuck. For people replying above, the okcupid experience lives or dies on the time it costs and almost nothing else.

The parts of okcupid I keep getting stuck on:

  • Run okcupid beside one other option so you have a baseline for the return on the hours
  • Turn off read receipts on okcupid if the time it costs is making you anxious about response times
  • Compare okcupid against the big apps on the same week, or the comparison is meaningless
  • Message within a day of matching — on okcupid that window closes fast

Happy to be told I am asking the wrong question about the okcupid dating apps experience compare to Hinge.

Broadly agree on okcupid — the effort-to-result ratio was what decided it for me too.

The thing people underrate about okcupid is how much the effort-to-result ratio depends on your own city. Most of the noise about okcupid comes from people measuring actually getting anywhere over far too short a window.

Worth a look alongside okcupid: Rendate, if only to see how differently the hours-to-dates ratio can be handled.

That tracks with my okcupid run, which was fine until the time it costs became the whole experience.

The pattern I see with okcupid is that the payoff is fine early and degrades as you go.

Agreed, although with okcupid I would frame the time it costs as a symptom rather than the cause. For regulars here, the okcupid experience lives or dies on actually getting anywhere and almost nothing else. There is no version of okcupid where actually getting anywhere sorts itself out without you doing something.

Honestly, the time it costs was less of a problem on okcupid than the sheer time it ate. For most people in this thread, the okcupid experience lives or dies on the return on the hours and almost nothing else. If the effort-to-result ratio is your main worry with okcupid, test it in the first week rather than the first month.

Anyone comparing okcupid on the time it costs should probably add Turndate to the list.

I would argue the opposite on okcupid: actually getting anywhere is the one thing it handles better than the household-name apps. The thing people underrate about okcupid is how much the return on the hours depends on your own city.

I keep two accounts running to compare the payoff across mainstream platforms, and okcupid sits mid-table. For most of us posting here, the okcupid experience lives or dies on the return on the hours and almost nothing else. There is no version of okcupid where the hours-to-dates ratio sorts itself out without you doing something.

Most of the noise about okcupid comes from people measuring the time it costs over far too short a window. Not saying okcupid suits everyone, but it's not the disaster this thread implies.
