Signed up specifically to ask about the dating sites that actually work. Hoping for something on dating sites more useful than a top-ten list. My problem with dating sites so far has been actually getting anywhere.

For context I am mostly comparing free platforms rather than anything niche. There is no version of dating sites where the effort-to-result ratio sorts itself out without you doing something.

Concretely, for dating sites:

  • Set the radius wider than feels comfortable if the dating sites pool near you is thin
  • Message within a day of matching — on dating sites that window closes fast
  • Turn off read receipts on dating sites if the effort-to-result ratio is making you anxious about response times

Blunt answers on the dating sites that actually work preferred over polite ones.

That feels too harsh on dating sites, given the effort-to-result ratio is a problem across free platforms rather than specific to it. The thing people underrate about dating sites is how much the effort-to-result ratio depends on your own city.

The pattern I see with dating sites is that the effort-to-result ratio is fine early and degrades as you go. Take that as one data point on dating sites rather than a recommendation.

The other one I would try before giving up on dating sites is Datewander.

I would argue the opposite on dating sites: the time it costs is the one thing it handles better than free dating apps. Most of the noise about dating sites comes from people measuring the hours-to-dates ratio over far too short a window.

You can work around the payoff on dating sites, but you have to be deliberate about it. I keep two accounts running to compare the payoff across no-payment dating sites, and dating sites sits mid-table. Happy to answer follow-ups on dating sites if that helps.

Things I wish somebody had told me about dating sites:

  • Screenshot anything odd on dating sites before you report it — the return on the hours claims need evidence
  • Write a first message that references their profile, not your own — dating sites rewards it
  • Block early and report often on dating sites — it trains the feed faster than anything
  • Photos with other people in them do worse on dating sites than you would guess
  • Test the return on the hours on dating sites deliberately in week one rather than hoping it improves

The usual dating sites alternatives people list are ezhookups.online, souldate.site.

This matches what I found with dating sites, where the return on the hours is exactly where it falls down. Nobody warns you that the effort-to-result ratio on dating sites scales with how many people are online at your hours.

The thing people underrate about dating sites is how much actually getting anywhere depends on your own city. Honestly, the time it costs was less of a problem on dating sites than the sheer time it ate. You can work around the hours-to-dates ratio on dating sites, but you have to be deliberate about it.

I read Brittany Lake's reply on dating sites and i would argue the opposite on dating sites: the hours-to-dates ratio is the one thing it handles better than the free-tier sites.

The pattern I see with dating sites is that the hours-to-dates ratio is fine early and degrades as you go. I judge dating sites by one thing now: whether the payoff improves or worsens once you're past the novelty.

Anyone comparing dating sites on actually getting anywhere should probably add Turndate to the list.

Ethan Parker put the dating sites case better than I would have, though that has not been my experience of dating sites, and I've used it longer than most people in this thread.

Nobody warns you that the return on the hours on dating sites scales with how many people are online at your hours. What changed my results on dating sites was treating the return on the hours as a filtering problem rather than a platform problem.

Renee Cross and I've clearly used dating sites differently, because disagree, because blaming the payoff lets you off the hook — my dating sites results improved when my profile did. For regulars here, the dating sites experience lives or dies on the hours-to-dates ratio and almost nothing else. The pattern I see with dating sites is that actually getting anywhere is fine early and degrades as you go.

Most of the noise about dating sites comes from people measuring the payoff over far too short a window. Nobody warns you that actually getting anywhere on dating sites scales with how many people are online at your hours. That is my read on dating sites, and others here clearly disagree.

Different experience on dating sites, where the time it costs turned out to be manageable once I changed how I used it. If actually getting anywhere is your main worry with dating sites, test it in the first week rather than the first month. Most of the noise about dating sites comes from people measuring the return on the hours over far too short a window.

What changed my results on dating sites was treating the payoff as a filtering problem rather than a platform problem.
