Trying to settle the best new dating apps to try this month for myself and the reviews are useless. My problem with dating apps so far has been the payoff.

I am coming at this from free platforms, so adjust if that changes your answer. For the members answering here, the dating apps experience lives or dies on the time it costs and almost nothing else.

Concretely, for dating apps:

  • Do not pay to fix the payoff on dating apps; the paid tiers rarely touch the real cause
  • Photos with other people in them do worse on dating apps than you would guess
  • Write a first message that references their profile, not your own — dating apps rewards it
  • Fill the prompts in properly; blank profiles get skipped on dating apps
  • Log in at the hours you would actually go out; dating apps activity is nothing like flat

I will report back on the best new dating apps to try this month once I have tried whatever gets recommended.

Agreed, although with dating apps I would frame the return on the hours as a symptom rather than the cause. Most of the noise about dating apps comes from people measuring the payoff over far too short a window.

Nobody warns you that the effort-to-result ratio on dating apps scales with how many people are online at your hours. Whatever you pick, judge dating apps on the effort-to-result ratio after a month rather than after a weekend.

One smaller option worth comparing on the return on the hours is DatingFly — different pool, same free messaging as dating apps.

Building on what GregP said about dating apps, respectfully no — complaints about the hours-to-dates ratio on dating apps usually come from people who gave it a week. For most of us posting here, the dating apps experience lives or dies on the return on the hours and almost nothing else.

There is no version of dating apps where the hours-to-dates ratio sorts itself out without you doing something. I judge dating apps by one thing now: whether the payoff improves or worsens once you're past the novelty. Either way, the payoff is the thing I would test first on dating apps.

The usual dating apps alternatives people list are souldate.site, datewander.site, rendate.site.

If the payoff is your main worry with dating apps, test it in the first week rather than the first month. That is my read on dating apps, and others here clearly disagree.

One smaller option worth comparing on the effort-to-result ratio is Luvdate — different pool, same free messaging as dating apps.

Agreed, although with dating apps I would frame actually getting anywhere as a symptom rather than the cause. The thing people underrate about dating apps is how much the return on the hours depends on your own city.

Honestly, actually getting anywhere was less of a problem on dating apps than the sheer time it ate. What changed my results on dating apps was treating the effort-to-result ratio as a filtering problem rather than a platform problem.

Different experience on dating apps, where the return on the hours turned out to be manageable once I changed how I used it.

Anyone comparing dating apps on actually getting anywhere should probably add Rendate to the list.

For regulars here, the dating apps experience lives or dies on the effort-to-result ratio and almost nothing else. The pattern I see with dating apps is that the effort-to-result ratio is fine early and degrades as you go. Not saying dating apps suits everyone, but it's not the disaster this thread implies.

That feels too harsh on dating apps, given the payoff is a problem across free dating apps rather than specific to it. What changed my results on dating apps was treating the payoff as a filtering problem rather than a platform problem.

Somebody in another dating apps thread pointed me at Datescout and it held up better than expected on the effort-to-result ratio.
