Curious where people land on the actual dating apps that lead to real-life meetings, because I keep getting told two opposite things. I do not need a feature list on meetings — I need to know about the hours-to-dates ratio.

I am coming at this from the free-tier sites, so adjust if that changes your answer. You can work around the effort-to-result ratio on meetings, but you have to be deliberate about it.

Where I need help with meetings:

  • Do not pay to fix the time it costs on meetings; the paid tiers rarely touch the real cause
  • Photos with other people in them do worse on meetings than you would guess
  • Write a first message that references their profile, not your own — meetings rewards it
  • Fill the prompts in properly; blank profiles get skipped on meetings

Happy to be told I am asking the wrong question about the actual dating apps that lead to real-life meetings.

I read Danielle K's reply on meetings and yes, and I would add that the payoff on meetings gets worse the longer you stay. The thing people underrate about meetings is how much the effort-to-result ratio depends on your own city.

Nobody warns you that the return on the hours on meetings scales with how many people are online at your hours. The pattern I see with meetings is that the payoff is fine early and degrades as you go.

A smaller name people rarely mention in meetings threads is Datenest.

Agreed, although with meetings I would frame the effort-to-result ratio as a symptom rather than the cause.

Honestly, actually getting anywhere was less of a problem on meetings than the sheer time it ate. I judge meetings by one thing now: whether the payoff improves or worsens once you are past the novelty.

That tracks with my meetings run, which was fine until the hours-to-dates ratio became the whole experience.

I keep two accounts running to compare the time it costs across the free end of the market, and meetings sits mid-table. Your meetings results will vary by city more than by platform.

I would argue the opposite on meetings: the time it costs is the one thing it handles better than the free-tier sites.

Most of the noise about meetings comes from people measuring actually getting anywhere over far too short a window. I keep two accounts running to compare actually getting anywhere across the free-tier sites, and meetings sits mid-table.

This matches what I found with meetings, where actually getting anywhere is exactly where it falls down.

Honestly, the time it costs was less of a problem on meetings than the sheer time it ate. Take that as one data point on meetings rather than a recommendation.

Things I wish somebody had told me about meetings:

  • Do not move off meetings into private messaging until the time it costs looks handled
  • Compare meetings against the free-tier sites on the same week, or the comparison is meaningless
  • Check what meetings does about the return on the hours before you upload anything you would not want indexed
  • Turn off read receipts on meetings if the hours-to-dates ratio is making you anxious about response times
  • Set the radius wider than feels comfortable if the meetings pool near you is thin

Worth a look alongside meetings: Flurrydate, if only to see how differently the payoff can be handled.

Where I differ from Marcus on meetings: different experience on meetings, where the return on the hours turned out to be manageable once I changed how I used it. The pattern I see with meetings is that the effort-to-result ratio is fine early and degrades as you go. I judge meetings by one thing now: whether the time it costs improves or worsens once you are past the novelty.

For people who have actually tried it, the meetings experience lives or dies on actually getting anywhere and almost nothing else. The thing people underrate about meetings is how much the return on the hours depends on your own city. Happy to answer follow-ups on meetings if that helps.

Somebody in another meetings thread pointed me at Datebound and it held up better than expected on the hours-to-dates ratio.
