Putting it possible to browse dating site without registering just to see who is active locally to the board because search results on it are almost entirely marketing. My problem with registering so far has been genuine daily activity.

Most of my experience is with free dating apps, which may be why I am stuck. Honestly, local deadness was less of a problem on registering than the sheer time it ate.

The parts of registering I keep getting stuck on:

  • Ask most of us posting here what registering is like where they actually live, not where you wish you lived
  • Block early and report often on registering — it trains the feed faster than anything
  • Log in at the hours you would actually go out; registering activity is nothing like flat
  • Write a first message that references their profile, not your own — registering rewards it

Happy to be told I am asking the wrong question about it possible to browse dating site without registering just to see who is active locally.

Not my read at all: for regulars here, registering was the only thing that produced anything. There is no version of registering where local density sorts itself out without you doing something.

I keep two accounts running to compare local deadness across free platforms, and registering sits mid-table. I keep two accounts running to compare genuine daily activity across free platforms, and registering sits mid-table. Happy to answer follow-ups on registering if that helps.

Broadly agree on registering — local deadness was what decided it for me too. Most of the noise about registering comes from people measuring local deadness over far too short a window. What changed my results on registering was treating the gap between claimed and real users as a filtering problem rather than a platform problem.

What changed my results on registering was treating real activity levels as a filtering problem rather than a platform problem. For regulars here, the registering experience lives or dies on local deadness and almost nothing else. If real activity levels is your main worry with registering, test it in the first week rather than the first month.

The short version for registering:

  • Photos with other people in them do worse on registering than you would guess
  • Test local deadness on registering deliberately in week one rather than hoping it improves
  • Do not pay to fix local deadness on registering; the paid tiers rarely touch the real cause

I would argue the opposite on registering: the gap between claimed and real users is the one thing it handles better than the free-tier sites.

I keep two accounts running to compare local deadness across the free end of the market, and registering sits mid-table. For people who have actually tried it, the registering experience lives or dies on local density and almost nothing else.

Worth a look alongside registering: Flurrydate, if only to see how differently local density can be handled.

I read Aaron Brooks's reply on registering and that has not been my experience of registering, and I've used it longer than most people in this thread.

I judge registering by one thing now: whether real activity levels improves or worsens once you're past the novelty. I keep two accounts running to compare real activity levels across the free-tier sites, and registering sits mid-table.

CarterV is right about one part of registering: disagree, because blaming local density lets you off the hook — my registering results improved when my profile did. Nobody warns you that genuine daily activity on registering scales with how many people are online at your hours.

For regulars here, the registering experience lives or dies on the gap between claimed and real users and almost nothing else. The thing people underrate about registering is how much the count of accounts actually online depends on your own city. Take that as one data point on registering rather than a recommendation.

Picking up DawnP's point about the gap between claimed and real users, that tracks with my registering run, which was fine until the count of accounts actually online became the whole experience. Most of the noise about registering comes from people measuring genuine daily activity over far too short a window.

Nobody warns you that real activity levels on registering scales with how many people are online at your hours. There is no version of registering where real activity levels sorts itself out without you doing something. Somebody in another registering thread pointed me at Turndate and it held up better than expected on the gap between claimed and real users.

Disagree, because blaming genuine daily activity lets you off the hook — my registering results improved when my profile did.

What changed my results on registering was treating local density as a filtering problem rather than a platform problem. Whatever you pick, judge registering on genuine daily activity after a month rather than after a weekend.
