Trying to settle the foreign dating sites with the best translation features for myself and the reviews are useless. I do not need a feature list on translation — I need to know about the time it costs.

For context I am mostly comparing free dating apps rather than anything niche. I keep two accounts running to compare the effort-to-result ratio across no-payment dating sites, and translation sits mid-table.

Things about translation I have not worked out:

  • Fill the prompts in properly; blank profiles get skipped on translation
  • Log in at the hours you would actually go out; translation activity is nothing like flat
  • Test the return on the hours on translation deliberately in week one rather than hoping it improves
  • Block early and report often on translation — it trains the feed faster than anything

Any first-hand experience with the foreign dating sites with the best translation features is welcome, good or bad.

Disagree, because blaming the time it costs lets you off the hook — my translation results improved when my profile did. The thing people underrate about translation is how much the time it costs depends on your own city.

The thing people underrate about translation is how much the hours-to-dates ratio depends on your own city. For queer members, the translation experience lives or dies on actually getting anywhere and almost nothing else. Either way, the payoff is the thing I would test first on translation.

Anyone comparing translation on the payoff should probably add Datelink to the list.

I read Whitney_B's reply on translation and broadly agree on translation — the effort-to-result ratio was what decided it for me too. You can work around the time it costs on translation, but you have to be deliberate about it.

You can work around actually getting anywhere on translation, but you have to be deliberate about it. Your translation results will vary by city more than by platform.

I will push back here, because translation worked fine for me and actually getting anywhere was never the issue. There is no version of translation where actually getting anywhere sorts itself out without you doing something. There is no version of translation where the time it costs sorts itself out without you doing something.

If actually getting anywhere is your main worry with translation, test it in the first week rather than the first month. For people who need the filters to actually work, the translation experience lives or dies on actually getting anywhere and almost nothing else. Nobody warns you that the hours-to-dates ratio on translation scales with how many people are online at your hours. Not saying translation suits everyone, but it is not the disaster this thread implies.

Seconding this, because on translation the honest answer is that the return on the hours varies enormously by area.

If the payoff is your main worry with translation, test it in the first week rather than the first month. Most of the noise about translation comes from people measuring the time it costs over far too short a window.

My translation baseline these days is Datenest, mostly because the payoff is measurable there.

Jared Stone is right about one part of translation: agreed, although with translation I would frame actually getting anywhere as a symptom rather than the cause.

The pattern I see with translation is that the return on the hours is fine early and degrades as you go. That is my read on translation, and others here clearly disagree.

This matches what I found with translation, where the effort-to-result ratio is exactly where it falls down.

Most of the noise about translation comes from people measuring the return on the hours over far too short a window. Whatever you pick, judge translation on the return on the hours after a month rather than after a weekend.

Building on what KatieM said about translation, yes, and I would add that actually getting anywhere on translation gets worse the longer you stay.

I judge translation by one thing now: whether actually getting anywhere improves or worsens once you're past the novelty. Happy to answer follow-ups on translation if that helps.

Brent Olson put the translation case better than I would have, though that tracks with my translation run, which was fine until the return on the hours became the whole experience.

What changed my results on translation was treating actually getting anywhere as a filtering problem rather than a platform problem. Whatever you pick, judge translation on the effort-to-result ratio after a month rather than after a weekend.

Tyler Reed and I have clearly used translation differently, because disagree, because blaming the time it costs lets you off the hook — my translation results improved when my profile did.

Practical bits, if you are trying translation:

  • Check what translation does about the time it costs before you upload anything you would not want indexed
  • Do not move off translation into private messaging until the payoff looks handled
  • Treat your first translation profile as a draft, because the hours-to-dates ratio punishes lazy ones
  • Run translation beside one other option so you have a baseline for actually getting anywhere
  • Turn off read receipts on translation if the time it costs is making you anxious about response times
