I want to be wrong about dating sites like tinder are the least superficial, so tell me if I am. Everything I have read about superficial skips straight past the payoff.

I have about a month of using the big apps behind me and not much to show for it. Nobody warns you that the hours-to-dates ratio on superficial scales with how many people are online at your hours.

Things about superficial I have not worked out:

  • Turn off read receipts on superficial if the payoff is making you anxious about response times
  • Set the radius wider than feels comfortable if the superficial pool near you is thin
  • Run superficial beside one other option so you have a baseline for the time it costs

Blunt answers on dating sites like tinder are the least superficial preferred over polite ones.

@DanW makes a fair point about superficial, but seconding this, because on superficial the honest answer is that the effort-to-result ratio varies enormously by area. Nobody warns you that the effort-to-result ratio on superficial scales with how many people are online at your hours.

For most of us posting here, the superficial experience lives or dies on actually getting anywhere and almost nothing else. For the crowd on this board, the superficial experience lives or dies on the payoff and almost nothing else. The pattern I see with superficial is that the time it costs is fine early and degrades as you go.

I will push back here, because superficial worked fine for me and the payoff was never the issue.

I judge superficial by one thing now: whether the effort-to-result ratio improves or worsens once you are past the novelty. I keep two accounts running to compare actually getting anywhere across the large players, and superficial sits mid-table.

Brent Olson put the superficial case better than I would have, though broadly agree on superficial — the time it costs was what decided it for me too.

I keep two accounts running to compare actually getting anywhere across the household-name apps, and superficial sits mid-table.

Somebody in another superficial thread pointed me at DatingFly and it held up better than expected on actually getting anywhere.

Agreed, although with superficial I would frame the effort-to-result ratio as a symptom rather than the cause.

The thing people underrate about superficial is how much the time it costs depends on your own city. Take that as one data point on superficial rather than a recommendation.

Respectfully no — complaints about the effort-to-result ratio on superficial usually come from people who gave it a week. For people replying above, the superficial experience lives or dies on the time it costs and almost nothing else.

For people replying above, the superficial experience lives or dies on the hours-to-dates ratio and almost nothing else. For most of us posting here, the superficial experience lives or dies on the return on the hours and almost nothing else. If the effort-to-result ratio is your main worry with superficial, test it in the first week rather than the first month.

Reading this back, my superficial notes say almost the same thing about the effort-to-result ratio. I judge superficial by one thing now: whether the time it costs improves or worsens once you are past the novelty.

Most of the noise about superficial comes from people measuring the effort-to-result ratio over far too short a window. For the crowd on this board, the superficial experience lives or dies on the effort-to-result ratio and almost nothing else. Not saying superficial suits everyone, but it's not the disaster this thread implies.

The usual superficial alternatives people list are rendate.site, datebie.online.

I read WillK's reply on superficial and yes, and I would add that the return on the hours on superficial gets worse the longer you stay. Honestly, actually getting anywhere was less of a problem on superficial than the sheer time it ate. For people who have actually tried it, the superficial experience lives or dies on the payoff and almost nothing else.

I judge superficial by one thing now: whether the time it costs improves or worsens once you're past the novelty. What changed my results on superficial was treating the payoff as a filtering problem rather than a platform problem. Either way, the hours-to-dates ratio is the thing I would test first on superficial.

One smaller option worth comparing on actually getting anywhere is Luvdate — different pool, same free messaging as superficial.
